City Attorney
A city attorney is a position in city and municipal government in the United States. The city attorney is the attorney representing the municipality.
Unlike a district attorney or public defender, who usually handles criminal cases, a city attorney generally handles civil cases, advising the city on legal matters and representing it in court. City attorneys may advise city officials on a wide range of city businesses, ranging from nuisances to tax law to municipal annexations. A city attorney also advises the city's legislative body (such as a city council) on the legality of proposed actions and assists in the drafting of city ordinances and resolutions.
The City of Tahlequah's current city attorney is John Tyler Hammons.
John Tyler Hammons is a highly accomplished attorney and founding partner at Hammons Hamby & Price, based in Muskogee. With a focus on commercial transactions, estate planning, and real estate matters, Mr. Hammons has built a reputation for delivering exceptional results for his clients.
As a fourth-generation Oklahoman and an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation, Mr. Hammons has a deep connection to his community. In fact, he was elected as the 47th Mayor of the city of Muskogee at the age of just 19, making him one of the youngest mayors in American history. During his two terms in office, Mr. Hammons prioritized economic development and infrastructure improvements, leaving a lasting impact on the city.
After graduating from law school, Mr. Hammons served as an Assistant Attorney General of the Cherokee Nation before founding his own firm. He is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma College of Law and is admitted to practice law in the courts of the state of Oklahoma, all United States District Courts in Oklahoma, the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit, the courts of the Cherokee Nation, the courts of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, and the courts of the Choctaw Nation.
With his impressive track record and commitment to his community, Mr. Hammons is a trusted advisor and advocate for his clients. Whether you need assistance with a complex commercial transaction or estate planning matter, you can count on Mr. Hammons to provide the guidance and support you need to achieve your goals.
